How To Treat a Sprained Ankle

Have you tripped over something, fell and twisted your ankle? This has happened to many of us at some point in our life. It could happen while you were hiking or riding your bike and simply fell. There are several ways to cause a sprained ankle. Fortunately, there are ways to treat it at home. The  best way that I have found to treat a sprained ankle is by using the RICE method(Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation).

REST -You should avoid any activities that may cause more pain on your ankles. Your ankle needs lots of rest. If you feel like you still need physical activity, try swimming or using a rowing machine. This will help take less pressure off your ankles while you can still work out.

ICE -It is important to put ice on your ankle to avoid swelling and to decrease the pain. This will help to keep your ligaments from getting inflamed. You can wrap a towel or plastic bag with ice and place it on the injury for about 15-20 minutes at a time, 3 times a day for at-least the first 3 days.

COMPRESSION -Apply pressure to the ankle using a tensor or elastic bandage. Wrap the bandage around the injured area tightly but not too tight. You want it to feel comfortable.

ELEVATION -You want to elevate your ankle so that it rests above your heart. This way all the fluids will flow away from the injury. You can rest it on a bunch of pillows or books, whichever is most comfortable.

Remember to always use caution when walking on uneven surfaces. If you like some exercises to help strengthen the muscles, it is best to see a Physical Therapist.

Massage Will Boost Your Immune System

We have been told that massage will help relax your muscles and it is a great stress relief but what are some of the health benefits of massage therapy? Will it really improve your overall health? Will it help fight off disease and illnesses? The answer is 'Yes'. There has been a study done in 2010 in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine by University of California that a single session of Swedish massage helps increase patients white blood cells which has an effect on the immune system. Our immune system is our body's natural defense against infection and illness. I believe that our body has a natural way to heal itself and massage can help increase the body's own natural ability to heal.
